If you’re interested in endangered languages, language policy, and the experience of Native Americans, please do take a moment to read the guest blog post I wrote for the Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages.  Many people believe that language change and language death are just “natural” phenomena and don’t understand why we should be concerned; in my post I wanted to talk about how specific policies have repeatedly contributed to language extinction.

Native American boarding schools are the example, of many many possible examples, I chose to illustrate this point: the current language extinction crisis is not natural, it’s not fair, and we absolutely should be concerned about it.
